Isaiah 10:16-34 Word to Israel, The Remnant

As Isaiah did with the Word to Judah, he now begins to talk about the remnant that would emerge or be protected through the judgement. Here he again addresses Assyria, Israel, and Judah.

Assyria, used by God to punish Israel, thinks it is expanding its empire. In reality it is racing towards its own end. Assyria would defeat Israel and much of the Levant. However, as Isaiah prophesied, it would only manage an attempted siege on Jeruslaem. That siege itself was never really carried out, and was mysteriously and quickly abandoned. History (written by the Assyrians) fails to explain the quick retreat, but the Bible claims it was Godā€™s intervention. In any case, Isaiah here predicts that the Assyrian invasion force would be reduced to a small number. (A remnant?)

Israel, despite its exile, would also have a remnant that would return to the land and to God. Once a people of God outnumbering the sands, it would become a small remnant of people loyal to God.

Isaiahā€™s message to Jerusalem here is to fear not. Assyria will one day get close to the city but will only manage to ā€œshake its fistā€ at Zion. Assyria is going to ultimately be punished, destroyed, and be no more. God is in control of history. It pays to rely on and trust in Him for our well-being.
