John’s Question (Luke 7:18-23)
Luke returns to John, last seen imprisoned by the status quo in chapter three. John’s disciples report what Jesus is doing to John and he sends two of them to Jesus with a question: “Are you the one?” John had already declared that Jesus was the one, as it had been revealed to him by the Spirit. Why is he now showing signs of doubting, questioning?
Perhaps it is because he is sitting in prison. The captives are supposed to be free, aren’t they? It is difficult for anyone to stay strong in difficult circumstances. However, there is also the issue of expectations. Even John appears to have had some ideas about who the Messiah would be and what He would do. The Jewish people of all backgrounds and groups thought that the Messiah would be more of a political, powerful, bringer of change in the world. Jesus is bringing incredible change, but it is not of the expected variety. The suffering Servant role had to come first.
Jesus answers with actions rather than words. He says that He is the Messiah, but in a more powerful way that simply stating the fact clearly. He heals the sick and leprous, brings sight to the blind and makes the lame walk. He raises the dead and declares the good news of the kingdom. Jesus is the Messiah, even if no one expected that He would be a sacrifice for humanity.
