The Sermon on the Plain (8) Wisdom (Luke 6:46-49)

Jesus concludes His sermon asking why people would come to him (compare v.47 to v.18), call Him “Lord, Lord,” and not follow His teaching. This is a real concern because people do like to hear ideas and not act on them. A very long history of cultural Christianity proves that this is a problem among those who claim to follow Jesus.

Jesus’s teaching is an invitation to follow. Those who believe in Him and call Him “Lord” in the way that is effective, are those who heed His words. Here we get the parable of the two kinds of people. Those who do what Jesus says vs. those who merely like His words. “Belief” in Scripture is a trust issue. Those who believe in Jesus are like people who plant their lives in the foundation of His Lordship. They are NOT people who merely hear what He says and parrot it. Jesus’s message is a call to live our lives as He says it should be lived. The proof of the belief is in the doing, not the hearing.
