Godzilla x Kong the New Empire (2024) Saturday Monster Movies
With this film, Legendary enters the kids-movie phase that Toho explored in the 60s and 70s. Much more of a cartoon kids fare than even the monster in the suit era, this movie goes further into pure monster action than possibly any Kaiju film before it. There are countless scenes of landmarks being destroyed, but somehow it is less interesting than the old days when a man in a suit destroyed models. Never in any of these scenes of destruction, do we see any human toll. For a majority of the movie, we see Kong and other giant apes gallivanting around the hollow Earth. With no point of reference, it is easy to forget that this movie is about giant monsters at all.
The moral of this spectacle (as it isnāt much of a story) is that, eventually, movie makers will quit trying to have anything to say and just aim at getting kids into theaters.
