Isaiah Chapter 6:11-13: The Plan, Divine Purpose

Isaiah’s response to his calling is one of shock, understandably. His, “How long?” is hard to interpret. Does he mean, “how long will I have to preach this message?” “How long until this hardening happens?” or “Is there any hope things will change?” In the end, it does not matter, as all three questions are answered.

God declares that He is going to destroy the land, exile the people, and fulfill the curses promised back in Deuteronomy when the people were warned what would happen if they abandoned God’s ways. This will not be a case of a more powerful people coming with more powerful gods and overcoming YHWH. YHWH will use another people to deliver His judgements.

And yet, a glimpse of hope does remain. Out of the felled and burned forest, a shoot will rise out of the stump. God has not forgotten His promises, and the Messiah is still going to come to save people from their rebellion.
