Isaiah Chapter 4: The Hope of the Future Jerusalem
The brief chapter four of Isaiah follows directly the dark descriptions of chapters two and three. In a similar fashion to chapter one, it follows God’s stark judgment with God’s gracious hope. This is going to be an ongoing thing in Isaiah.
Contrary to Israel’s current (both in Isaiah’s day as well as throughout history) status, the Jerusalem of the future is a place of good news and joy. There is a remnant of the people who are destined to remain God’s people and survive the harsh concequences of their rebellion.
God Himself will wash away all of their filth and blood-guilt. They will be cleansed through the judgment of God.
God Himself will create them anew. As in the days of the wilderness wanderings, when God dwelt with His people, there shall again be a cloud by day and fire by night, representing the presence of God.
The new Jerusalem will be a place for God’s people to dwell in safety.
