Godzilla vs. Megagurius (2000) Saturday Monster Movies
By the time we get to Megagurius, the Godzilla formula might seem to be played out. Even though future films will prove there is a lot left to mine here, this film will not do that. We get more of the same theme, albeit with new twists. Godzilla vs. Megagurius will do what most of the films in the Millenium Era will do, and that is to discount every other story save the first one. However, not even all of Godzilla 1954 is accepted. In this story, Godzilla was never defeated, and Tokio was destroyed. Now, in the story’s present, Japan has invented a weapon to fight Godzilla. This weapon creates mini-black holes! As if the product of nuclear technology—Godzilla—wasn’t bad enough!
When they deploy this weapon, a giant dragonfly from prehistoric times, briefly appear through the hole and leaves some eggs behind. Now we have our new threat. Godzilla and the Dragonfly progeny fight, all while mankind tries to fight as well, to no effect.
The two takeaways here are: Don’t try to manipulate nature to solve your problems. (The age-old Godzilla moral.) However, a new twist that might be relevant today is: prehistoric nature has stuff to throw at us that we are completely unprepared to face. So, good luck with all the pathogens reemerging from the melting polar icecaps!
