1950s in Horror
The fifties had their own weird horror flavor. More sci-fi than straight horror (with a few exceptions) it was the cold war, outer space age:
8. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Cold War paranoia couched in alien invasion was a big thing in the fifties.
7. The Blob (1958)
See above, even when cheesy teen fare.
6. The Thing from Another World (1951)
Again.
5. Gojira (1954)
Nuclear fallout was another big theme during the Cold War era.
4. The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
This is a beautiful and wholly original horror, especially for this decade. Universal was never better.
3. Les Diaboliques (1955)
Ahead of its time, this is Hitchcockian before Hitchcock got there.
2. The Horror of Dracula (1958)
Color made its way into horror, and it has never been the same since.
1. Rear Window (1954)
Not strictly horror, perhaps, but an example of the rare, “perfect” film.
