Isaiah: Initial Thoughts and Outline
I have been reading Isaiah pretty intensely and almost exclusively in my daily time in scripture for most of the past year. I always liked it more or less, but now that I am living in it, I love it. It is so rich and influential on the rest of scripture. I think one could spend their whole life reading Isaiah and never exhaust the depths of its literary, poetic, theological, and salvific imagery. For the next year or more, I plan on adding weekly thoughts as I journey through this book. It is intimidating and exciting all at once!
Here is a very basic outline to map my way through the book:
I. The Preface (1-5)
(*) The Call (6)
II. The Triumph of Grace (7-12)
III. Ten Oracles (13-23)
IV. Five Visions (24-27)
V. Six Woes (28-35)
VI. Interlude: History (36-39)
VII. Comfort & Hope in God’s Plan (40-48)
VIII. The Servant (49-55)
IX. Man’s Inability (56-59)
X. God’s Power to Judge and Save (60-66)
