Joel: The Context, Doom, Next Level! (2:1-11)

Joel returns to the description of the invading locusts, describing their awesome, fearful power and comparing them to an invading army. This passage parallels 1:2-12, but with more intensity and doom:

(1:2-4) the announcement of the plague
            (2:1,2) the trumpet blast announcing the Day of YHWH
(1:5-7) the lament for the vineyards
            (2:3-5) the plague is described like a fire consuming the land
(1:8-10) the loss of the sacrificial system
            (2:6-9) the cities are consumed by the devastation as well
(1:11,12) the whole agricultural economy is gone
            (2:10,11) an apocalyptic vision of devastation
