Hobab and Other Voices (Numbers 10:11-36)
Finally, after 10 chapters of preparation, Israel sets out to march to the promised land. God will guide them with the cloud. They can’t go wrong as long as they follow His careful instructions and clear leadership.
And yet, they ask Hobab—a wilderness expert—to go with them. Why? According to Moses, he can serve as a wise guide. He knows the wilderness. He can help them walk the right paths and camp in the right places. Since everything else in this section of chapters 1-10 is seen as Israel doing right, we can assume this too was a good decision. We do not hear later that it was a bad choice.
Followers of God can do well to listen to wisdom from and source, as long as it is truly wise. The rest of Numbers will showcase many voices. Some will be good voices and some bad. A big part of following God while living in a world of voices is discerning which ones are worth heeding and which aren’t.
Hobab seems to be one of the good ones.
