Real Faith, Real Change (Hebrews 12:25-29)

Hebrews warns us that we should not take the sacrifice of Jesus for granted! Everything the author has told us up to this point is a consistent theme: do not drift away from the faith, nor the revelation that you have received from God! Other places in the New Testament talk about how we are secure in Christ and can be sure about or salvation. 1 John talks about the signs we will see in our life that can prove to us that we have trully and faithfully responded to the gospel. Hebrews gives us a similar message, by warning us to stick with the growth and changes that salvation will bring into our lives.

Put another way, there are some people who convince themselves that they are followers of Jesus who are not. Maybe they understand faith as a mere intellectual acknowledgment of truth. Maybe they think there are certain actions or works that they can do like some checklist to get into a righa t relationship with God. Whatever they are doing, it amounts to trusting in their own achievements.

Hebrews has made it clear that it is Christ alone who has achieved our rescue. However, faith in Christ results in a complete trust in what He has done and following what He wants us to do with our lives. Trust and obedience. Not to earn what Christ has already earned, but rather as a natural product of what Christ’s sacrifice has accomplished. If we don’t see a change, however slow or small, or we don’t stick with the decision we make to follow Jesus, that should serve as a warning sign that we need to turn around and follow again.
