The 4th Best All Time Film
(2nd Pre-1973)
Rear Window (1954)
Hitchcock was a genius at the craft of cinematic storytelling. Among his many masterpieces are Vertigo, NXNW, Psycho, and so many more. However, at the tippy top is his absolute best, Rear Window.
It is cinema at its most basic. We get the story of a man watching the neighborhood, told as we watch the neighborhood. We see information as our protagonist sees it, and we assume the position of the voyeur.
It is so effective that I have b=never watched this movie with someone for their first time without getting to see them jump when the killer realizes they are watching him. Pure cinematic joy!
