The 10th Best All-Time Film
(4th Pre-1973)
North by Northwest (1959)
The film that inspired the James Bond franchise of films was and remains the best. Of the whole bunch. This is the epitome of fantastical action films, specifically of that wonderful subgenre where an ordinary person gets caught up in an international spy caper. It is not at all meant to carry any symbolism or meaning. However, it is a great story of its time, delving into deception and things not being what they seem. Perhaps one could even say, “things being given significance beyond what they really possess.” It is one of the best examples of the cold war world.
