After the amazing, neo-classical phase of Disney animation—culminating with the painted backgrounds on “Sleeping Beauty”—Disney entered its “modern” phase, where the artistic style was dictated by technology. Namely, the technology of the copier machine. This 1960s era of Disney is characterized by the “rough” sketch quality made possible (or unavoidable) by the use of Xerox machines. The animators work went straight from paper to cell without much clean-up work. And somehow, it is charming that way.

It helps that the stories they told and the way that they told them were so well crafted. And, in the case of the best film of these efforts “The Jungle Book,” they also had the Sherman Brothers. These guys created some of the most memorable songs in cinema, and one could argue that the “Jungle Book” has songs most synonymous with Disney.
