Most Anticipated 2020 Films
As always at this time of year, I’ve taken a look at what is supposed to be coming out in theaters. For some films we only have a name and a hint of the plot, and there are other titles not on the schedule yet that will be better than the current offerings, but here are the top 30 films I am anticipating. (Of the 55 or so on my radar.)
30. The Rhythm Section
January releases are almost always disappointing, but who knows?
29. The Way Back
Like "Hoosiers" but “extra.”
28. Wonder Woman 1984
The first WW was the most watchable DC movie in years, and 1984 was one of the best years ever.
27. Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Almost guaranteed to disappoint, right?
26. Candyman
Do we really need a remake? Probably not.
25. West Side Story
This one does need a remake, and I want to see a Spielberg musical. (“In the Heights” is another promising musical offering this year.)
24. The Empty Man
No idea what this is going to be, but I’m hopeful for a creative horror concept.
23. Saint Maud
This one promises to be disturbing (as all religious based horror) but hopefully it will be thoughtful and provocative in a good way.
22. A Quiet Place Part II
The first one was fresh, but sequels are always tricky.
21. Gretel & Hansel
The art direction promises to bring the disturbing side of fairy tales back.
20. The Assistant
The trailer for this film is exactly what trailers should be.
19. Promising Young Woman
Socially relevant horror with America’s favorite theme: revenge.
18. Death on the Nile
The first one was good but disappointing. This is one of my favorite of Christie’s books.
17. Antebellum
Hard to say exactly what is going on here, but it has hints of one of my favorite short stories: “The Night Face Up.”
16. The Personal History of David Copperfield
I should read some Dickens someday.
15. Soul
Pixar.
14. Black Widow
Marvel.
13. Eternals
Even more intriguing Marvel.
12. Sometimes Always Never
Bill Nighy.
11. Onward
Pixar.
10. Wendy
A Peter Pan from the director of “The Beasts of the Southern Wild”
9. The Witches
Not sure I want this one remade, but there is room for improvement.
8. Godzilla vs. Kong
Silly, popcorn fun. And the problem with all the recent Godzilla and Kong films has been the antagonist monsters. So this one shouldn’t have that problem.
7. News of the World
Tom Hanks in a western.
6. Emma
What needs to be said?
5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
I have guilty pleasured this who horror cinematic universe.
4. No Time to Die
Bond, Craig’s Bond.
3. Tenet
Christopher Nolan.
2. Last Night in Soho
Edgar Wright.
1. Dune
It’s time to get this one right.
