The 35th Best All-Time Film

(13th Pre-1998)

Mary Poppins (1964)

One of the best ever musicals is the story of some parents who need fixing. As used to be the case with a lot of well-to-do families, they needed to stop neglecting their kids. (I haven’t seen the new movie yet, but if I were to write an update to the story, it would be about parents needing to learn to be parents, and not just friends with their kids.)

Under that guise, the story uses the titular nanny to teach the kids (and the audience) about all aspects of life. Mostly, to look at the world through more than just one perspective. This is what learning, imagination, and play are supposed to be about. Broadening minds and grasping reality.

With wonderful songs like “Feed the Birds,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Cim Cim Cheree,” and “The Life I Lead,” Disney cornered the market on great musical songs. The Sherman brothers were a national treasure.
