The 34th Best All-Time Film
(13th 1973-1998)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Yes, the war film that should have won the Oscar, but was beat out by a minor romance that no one has ever watched again. (Actually, look back at 1998. “Shakespeare in Love” was not bad, but it was the fifth best film of the that year at best.) “Saving Private Ryan” is so much more than just a war movie. It is known for that opening set piece that tops any other war movie, of course. And, even though it is another World War II film, it does nothing to talk about the justifications of our involvement in that fight. (Spielberg had covered that ground five years earlier.) This movie is all about coming to grips with the sacrifices made during that fight.
