Rembrandt

This summer we had an opportunity to visit Leiden, Netherlands. For those of you like me who didn’t know, this was the city that the pilgrims went to before they decided to travel to the Americas. It is also the city where Rembrandt was born a trained as a painter. While there I bought some prints of his drawings.

I got a sketch of some trees in the rain, and several of his biblical sketches, that I like and have used before in some blog posts here. Jesus teaching, Adam and Eve, the Prodigal Son, and Abraham being stopped as he was to sacrifice Isaac.

I also bought two prints that I hadn’t seen before: “A Man Making Water” and “A Woman Making Water.” My hope is to frame them and put them in the guest bathroom, pending the wife’s permission.

It was all a good reminder to me that excellence and beauty, art and perfection can reflect both the sacred and the profane. And it does us well to consider both aspects of life.
