Aquaman Rant
DC really has a problem on its hands. It tries so hard to deliver exciting, watchable, popcorn movies and falls right on it face every time. The last two films in the “DC Cinematic Universe” which are the ones everyone claims as the best, both end in confusing, fake looking, explosion fests that are hard to sit through. Not because they are too intense, but because they numb the audience into submission. They are confusing, but worse, they feel fake. Much like the Disney reimagining of all their animated films as “live action,” these films are animated trying to look real, and come off as twice as off-putting. I don’t know if they are doing things on the cheap or what, but their de-aging animation is terrible.
About the only thing Aquaman has going for it is the earnestness with which they are treating everything. There is humor, but none of the self-deprecating, self-aware nature that is all over Marvel. But, even that, it must be said, is more appealing than trying to take the lamest DC hero seriously.
2018 showed us how action should be done, in Mission Impossible Fallout. That too was global-level stakes and pure adrenaline fun, but it felt real. Aquaman comes off as a terrible animated film.
