"The Nun" (2018)
The thing about the Conjuring films is that they are good, fun, horror. They don’t have huge amount of gore, language, or nudity (none of the latter), but they have great creepy atmosphere and scares that don’t rely too heavily on jumps.
What they do have is a strong sense of good vs. evil, and even spiritual aspects. The writer of the last three films even claims to be a devout Christian.
Don’t let that fool you into the fact that they are anything but a Hollywood take on the faith. First off, this is a Catholic universe. In Hollywood horror, that is the only form of Christianity that seems to exist. Secondly, there is no room here for the gospel. Good vs. evil may start out as God (or at least the Church) against the devil, but it quickly becomes just a monster fight. And thirdly, there is no room for any theology of any kind here. The films don’t even manage to stay consistent within their own stories.
All that said, “The Nun” is fun and safe. If you are looking for creepy scares in the long winter nights to come, you should give it a shot.
