The 33rd Best Films
Pre-1973
Anatomy of a Murder (1959) Otto Preminger
Touch of Evil (1958) Orson Welles
12 Angry Men (1957) Sidney Lumet
A trio of late-50s, black and white, legal thriller stories that have a lot of substance to say, even applicable to our culture today.
1973-1998
Die Hard (1988) John McTiernan
One of the best “reluctant hero” films out there?
Post-1998
Inglorious Basterds (2009) Quentin Tarantino
I am conflicted about all the revenge films in America, and Tarantino seems to only tell those sorts of stories. That said, this wish fulfillment against the hatred of the Third Reich does not feel excessive, and the artistry of each dialogue set-piece is something to behold.
