Top Films 47-48 in Brief
48. “Lost Horizon” (1937)
A fascinating story about the dangers of the Zeitgeist of the 30s that came out just a couple years before the world went to war. Timely for today.
48. “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1974)
The best thing the surrealist comedy troupe ever made. Still too much for some people, and the end falls apart.
48. “The Ninth Gate” (2000)
One of those good vs. evil yarns that exposes the dangerous temptation of evil. Sometimes the desire to expose a mystery is merely a fascination with crime.
47. “From Russia with Love” (1963)
“Goldfinger” (1964)
“Dr. No” (1962)
“Thunderball” (1965)
The early Bond films were the best of the series until the modern, nuanced, less cartoony version of this century.
47. “The Return of the Pink Panther” (1975)
This is not my highest ranked of the series, but maybe the one I return to most often.
47. “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” (2011)
A spy film that is decidedly not spy-fi. A realistic, gritty, Cold War period piece that bears repeat viewings.
