Top Films 45-46 in Brief

46. The Pink Panther (1963)
The beginning of a “series” of films that would look a lot different from this one, but that are the kind of film that never gets old. This one doesn’t really fit with the rest of the Panther films, but it is still one of the better ones.

46. Romeo + Juliet (1996)
If the Pink Panther exudes 60’s sensibilities and fashions, Romeo + Juliet could not be more nineties. But, where it might seem hopelessly dated and not hold up, this retelling of the bard’s play is really quite good.

46. Down with Love (2003)
Before he was making the Antman films, Reed made this little tribute to the “sex” comedies of the sixties with Doris Day. It is a good effort, updating the filmmaking while maintaining the attitude of those charming stories.

45. Romeo and Juliet (1968)
This more classical telling of the play is probably the cinematic standard.

45. Witness (1985)
Ford as a totally different character from the Solo and Jones persona he is known for. This is one of Weir’s better efforts, and he is one of my favorite directors. And the soundtrack has to be considered in my eventual best-of lists.

45. Midnight in Paris (2011)
My hands-down favorite Allen film. It doesn’t really feel like one, actually. The story of nostalgia and discontent with modernity is sweet, but also has a warning in its message. Choose to live meaningfully now over escapism.
