44th Best Films in Brief
Pre-1973
The Lady Vanishes (1939) Alfred Hitchcock
This, Hitch’s best British film, is so very entertaining, but also insightful. I love the idea of a story where a lone witness has to convince the whole world of an important truth.
1973-1998
French Kiss (1995) Lawrence Kasdan
As far as romantic comedies go, this is among the best. Less about simple romance, it is an inciteful study of reality over and against the fantasy of a safe, planned out, love. Love overcoming fear, really.
Post-1998
Tree of Life (2011) Terrence Malick
I love this film, but it isn’t so much a story as much as it is a sonic, pictoral, poem. Definitely not for everyone, but undeniably beautiful and moving.
