Some SCC Ranked
I’m not one of those people who listen exclusively to “Christian” music. I sometimes feel as though I haven’t introduced it enough in my house. And living outside the USA, it is hard to come by if I don’t seek it out. But it has had a huge impact on my faith and worldview. Both in my formative years and in the decade plus that I worked primarily with young people. Music has tremendous power to shape our thinking. And lately, in the past year or so, I find I am pulling it out more and more. It is like a gift that sees us through tough times.
One of the artists who had the biggest impact on me (as well as the whole generation) was Steven Curtis Chapman. I still remember hearing his music for the first time. I was preparing to leave Chile to return to the States for college and a friend of mine had a copy of “For the Sake of the Call.” I remember listening to it several times through on my Walkman. The music was good, of course, but his lyricism was amazing. Over the next 15 years or so, Steven Curtis Chapman shaped a lot of my theology, especially as it related to my understanding of vocation and the Christian calling in general.
When I left the States for Europe, I didn’t keep up with the new music coming out, so I don’t know much that he or any other CCM artists have released since 2006. Here are my top 25 most revisited SCC songs, the ones that have shaped my life:
