Top Movies 95-97 in Brief

97. “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993)

A romantic comedy where the boy and girl never meet until the last scene? This is the ultimate romantic-love-is-such-a-tease movie. Whatever their relationship ended up being, it could never possibly live up to the anticipation this film extends to ridiculous lengths. Thankfully we never got the sequel.

97. “Hatari!” (1962)

This is a very personal selection. There is not much to single the story out, even with the presence of the Duke and the musical genius of Mancini. I just really wanted to catch animals for zoos when I was a kid. Thank you, Willard Price.

97. “The Intern” (2015)

The honest story of inter-generational challenges and connection is heartwarming and feels very real. Best thing De Niro has done in a long time.

96. “In the Heat of the Night” (1967)

One of the small class of Best Picture winners that was and still is a truly important film. We need to revisit this story again and again.

96. “Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn” (1982)

This is the best of the original ten Star Trek movies, and serves as a bit of a stand-in for nearly all of them.

96. “The Conjuring” (2013)

As far as silly supernatural horror movies go, this one has some of the best artistic design and atmosphere. And it is very creepy fun for the majority of the films duration.

95. “Winchester ‘73” (1950)

Stewart is one of my favorite movie stars, and the westerns he made with Anthony Mann are some of the best in the genre.

95. “A Few Good Men” (1992)

I don’t usually go for courtroom drama, but this one has that extra element of taking on the evil within the system. Nicholson is great as always (at least beck then) and even Cruise didn’t seem quite so silly yet.

95. “Das Weiße Band” (2009)

The evil that men do told in ordinary, small town boredom. It is somewhat dry, distant, euro art, but anyone who has experienced small town life will recognize the special breed of depravity that hides in small places.
