Jejune

(Poetry Scales 38)

Roses are red
Violets are…

unless they are white
or yellow
or burgundy
or any other myriad of colors
some are grown for their thorns,

and while we are at it
violets come in many colors too
though not often blue, but more a shade of

…violet.

For some reason blue is the favorite of many
perhaps because it is so new.
Everyone tends toward the hip and the trendy,
seldom do we choose for the few.
It is thought to be faithful, fanciful, and silly
but cold, and sad, and distant…

(I for one prefer a good green
but that is another subject altogether.)

So, Roses are colorful
Violets are too
And thus begun poems
Are very jejune
